Spanish in Contact with French in Quebec and its Study thanks to «Corpus oral de la lengua española en Montreal» (COLEM)

Abstract

This paper summarizes the linguistic situation of Quebec and its ‘Latin’ immigration. It also describes the situation of Spanish in the Montreal Metropolitan Region, a space where Spanish-French contact is favored by the continuous migration and local perception of the Hispanic. Finally, thanks to Corpus oral de la lengua española en Montreal data, it deals with the integration of migrants and exemplifies the main processes that take place in contact situations of languages and varieties: lexical loans, use of certain markers and a concrete case of syntactic transfer, phenomena all result of contact.
