Submissions
Submission Preparation Checklist
As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.- The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
- The submission file is prepared in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format, based on the journal template file
- Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
- If available, the Orcid profile number(s) of the author(s) is (are) provided.
- The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
- Illustrations, images, tables and data sets are both included in the submission file and prepared as independent files to be submitted separately.
Articles
Articles are scholarly pieces of writing (6'000-12'000 words) that presents original research, reviews existing studies, or proposes theoretical advancements in a specific field related to the study of European Martial Arts. Its primary purpose is to communicate findings, methodologies, and interpretations to a specialized audience, contributing to the collective knowledge in that discipline.
Most scientific articles follow a standardized format, such as:
- Abstract: A brief summary of the article's content.
- Introduction: Context and objectives of the study.
- Methods: Detailed description of the research design and methodology.
- Results: Presentation of findings, often including data, tables, and figures.
- Discussion: Interpretation of results and their implications.
- Conclusion: Summary of findings and suggestions for future research.
- References: Citations to prior work and sources used.
They are published in a yearly (regular) issue, or in an edited issue (typically as conference proceedings, submission on invitation).
They are published online and in print.
Research Notes
Research Notes are scholarly pieces of writing (3'000-6'000 words) that presents an original research or a recent finding in a specific field related to the study of European Martial Arts, without the full development expected in an Article. Its primary purpose is to communicate ongoing research results to a specialized audience, contributing to the collective knowledge in that discipline.
They are published in a yearly (regular) issue, or in an edited issue (typically as conference proceedings, submission on invitation).
They are published online and in print.
Primary Source Interpretation
Primary Source Analyses are scholarly or public history contributions to the database of the project "Textualisation of the Martial Arts", hosted at the University of Trier (Germany), led by Dr. Eric Burkart. They can be partial or full editions of primary sources, codicological notes, or interpretations of German fight books and German martial arts texts in manuscript and print created between 1300 and 1600.
The Primary Source Analyses undergo a peer-review process. They published online only by the journal, and mirrored in the database.

Book Reviews
Book reviews are critical evaluations (1'000-2'000 words) of a recently published academic book, typically written by an expert in the field. It serves to inform the journal's audience about the book's content, arguments, strengths, weaknesses, and contribution to the discipline.
