This article examines a little-known relationship between the Negritude poet Léopold Sédar Senghor and French-speaking Switzerland. In 1956, Senghor wrote an article on “young Swiss poetry” in response to an invitation from six poets from Geneva to comment on their writings. Although there was no further follow-up, this connection between Senegalese and French-speaking Swiss literature nonetheless bears witness to a time when a Francophone cultural space was beginning to take shape.
