This article reflects on the political and aesthetic reconfigurations proposed by Latin American writers. Using the essay genre, which is highly connoted in Latin America, emerging writers of the new millennium advance their dissents and outline alternative paths to magical realism and the authorial positions of Gabriel García Márquez. I will focus successively on the cases of Chilean author Alberto Fuguet (1968) and Ecuadorian author Leonardo Valencia (1969), both relatively contemporary, who propose different ways of understanding literature and what it means to be a Latin American author in the 21st century.
