Author Guidelines

Journal Focus

The Journal of Eye Movement Research (JEMR) is devoted to all aspects of oculomotor functioning, including methodology of eye recording, neurophysiological and cognitive models, attention, reading as well as applications in neurology, ergonomy, media research, and other areas.


Manuscripts must conform to the structure, layout and format recommended by the American Psychological Association (APA). Authors are urged to use one of the JEMR templates to ensure that their manuscripts are properly formatted. A Word template, a LibreOffice template (Version 5.0 or higher) and an experimental Latex template are available.

Manuscripts must be submitted in PDF format.

Submission Procedure (Read carefully!)

  1. Check your submission against the Submission Preparation Checklist.

  2. Registration: If you have never submitted a manuscript to, or reviewed a manuscipt for JEMR, you must first register using the Register button in the navigation panel.

  3. Login using the Login button on the navigation panel. If you have forgotten your username and/or your password, select "Forgot your password?" and enter your email address to receive this information. JEMR identifies you through your email address, so please refrain from using multiple email addresses.

  4. On the main page, select Edit my Profile. There you can select multiple roles, namely Reader (for receiving announcements), Author (for submitting manuscripts), and Reviewer (for reviewing other manuscripts). Make sure that the Author role is selected.
  5. On the main page, select New Submission: This will lead you through several pages for submitting a new manuscript. If you do not see [New Submission], check your profile to ensure you have selected Author as one of your roles.


if applicable, revised manuscripts and responses to reviewers must be submitted to JEMR.

Final Submission

After the manuscript has been accepted for publication, the author(s) must submit the following files:

  1. A PDF version of the accepted manuscript
  2. An editable manuscript (in Word, LibreOffice, or Latex format)
  3. All figures in in a zip or tar file, with the following requirements:
    Image format: tif or png image format (not jpg!)
    Resolution: At least 900 DPI for line drawings, at least 600 DPI for figures with mixed text and images, at least 300 DPI for images without text
    No layers
The additional files must be submitted as supplementary files.

Article Processing  Charges

The Journal of Eye Movement Research does not currently charge any Article Processing Charges (also known as Publication Fees), but reserves the right to introduce modest charges some time in the future.


Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  2. The research complies with all Ethics standards as described in the Ethics Section.
  3. The submission file is in PDF format.
  4. Information about all authors and co-authors, including affiliation, email address, Orcid are being provided.
  5. Where available, DOIs and URLs for the references have been provided.
  6. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines and the Templates, which are found under "Author Guidelines".

The Journal of Eye Movement Research (JEMR) applies the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence (CC BY) to any article and data published. This licence facilitates the free, immediate access to, and unrestricted use of, original work of all types.

Under the Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) licence the following terms are met:

  • Copyright on any open access article published in JEMR is retained by the author or authors.
  • Authors grant JEMR a licence to publish the article and identify itself as the original publisher.
  • Authors grant any third party the right to use the article freely as long as its integrity is maintained and its original authors, citation details and publisher are identified. No permission is required from the authors or the journal publisher to reuse or repurpose JEMR content provided the original article is properly cited. For any reuse or redistribution of a work, the licence terms under which the work was published must be made clear.

Author’s agreement

In submitting a work to JEMR the author certifies that:

  • The authors is authorised by the co-authors to enter into these agreements.
  • The article is original and has not yet been published elsewhere.
  • The article as well as images, tables and figures used do not infringe on any existing copyright or any third party rights. If previously copyrighted work or proprietary data is used, written permission from the copyright holder must be supplied.
  • If not stated otherwise, figures, tables, images, and data are published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence (CC BY).
  • If any relevant accompanying data is submitted to repositories with stated licencing policies, the policies should not be more restrictive than CC BY.
