Abstract

In early modern Europe, vernacular languages were taught mainly in cities and through foreign language manuals. As these sources predominantly focus on the acquisition of foreign languages as means of oral communication, they include chapters on pronunciation, sounds and speech as an important aspect of language teaching. In this sense, they differ from contemporary grammars dedicated to the search for linguistic norms of a certain premodern vernacular. The article aims at the analysis of these differences.
