A linguistic analysis of Othering practices in YouTube comments about people with Down syndrome

Abstract

This article examines how people with Down syndrome are discursively constructed as a social group, differentiated from, and subordinated to people without disabilities in YouTube comments. Such routinized processes of outgroup construction, differentiation, and subordination realized through linguistic patterns are conceptualized as discursive practices of Othering. The analysis is based on a corpus of 1,101 user comments posted in response to three YouTube documentaries featuring individuals with Down syndrome in French, Spanish, and English. Adopting a Critical Discourse Analysis perspective, it draws on the analytical framework of racial Othering proposed in Zapf (2025), explores the applicability of this model to discourse on disability, and extends it. The findings show that most processes of Othering identified in Zapf (2025) also occur in the corpus analyzed here, although the majority of comments express a positive stance toward people with Down syndrome. Three additional processes are identified: idealization, which involves the generic attribution of moral exemplarity to people with Down syndrome; exceptionalization, through which positively evaluated characteristics and behaviors are construed as unexpected and therefore exceptional when displayed by people with Down syndrome; and functionalization, through which the “value” people with Down syndrome are said to provide for nondisabled society is foregrounded. Furthermore, the analysis reveals that at the linguistic level, Othering frequently operates implicitly, for instance, through comparisons that leave the reference group unspecified. Overall, the study highlights the analytical utility of the concept of Othering for the linguistic study of constructions of social difference.
