Call for Submissions Vol. 3
October 21, 2026
Opera | Black | Queer,
Journal of Black Opera and Music Theatre — Issue 3,
Submission deadline: 15 April 2027
Opera | Black | Queer: all three terms are contested. What kinds of performances count as opera? Who, and what, qualifies as Black? Which people, acts, and stories are queer? What emerges when these categories are brought into dialogue—and what tensions, exclusions, or possibilities become apparent at their intersections?
The Journal of Black Opera and Music Theatre (JBOM) invites submissions for its third issue, dedicated to “Opera | Black | Queer.” Building on the symposium co-organised by the Black Opera Research Network (BORN) and hosted by the UCLA Department of Musicology and Center for Musical Humanities, Herb Alpert School of Music, on 1–3 October 2026, this issue seeks to extend the conversations initiated there. Submissions are welcome from both symposium participants and authors who did not attend.
We invite scholars and practitioners to interrogate the intersections of opera, Blackness, and queerness through historical, theoretical, analytical, and practice-based perspectives. Contributions may address all three terms together or explore intersections between opera and Blackness or opera and queerness, while engaging with the journal’s commitment to centring Blackness as a subject, methodology, site of identity formation, or critical lens. JBOM understands opera and music theatre as capacious categories and welcomes work that challenges established boundaries of genre, geography, and disciplinary inquiry.
Themes and questions
Possible topics include, but are not limited to:
- Black queer histories, lives, and experiences in opera and music theatre;
- The possibilities and limitations of “opera,” “Black,” and “queer” as categories of analysis and artistic practice;
- Intersections of race, gender, sexuality, class, and coloniality in composition, performance, production, and reception;
- Black queer approaches to voice, embodiment, casting, staging, and spectatorship;
- Relationships between opera, music theatre, voguing, ballroom cultures, drag, and other performance practices;
- Musical representations of activism, liberation struggles, HIV/AIDS, and queer remembrance;
- Archives, oral histories, and practices of documenting Black queer performance;
- Institutional structures, exclusions, and strategies for change in opera and music theatre;
- Transnational and diasporic perspectives, including relationships and inequalities between the Global South and Global North;
- Artistic collaborations, adaptations, and experiments that reimagine the boundaries of opera and music theatre.
We welcome contributions that question the stability of these categories rather than treating them as self-evident. How do their meanings change across historical periods, geographical locations, languages, and performance traditions? How might Black and queer perspectives reshape the histories, aesthetics, institutions, and futures of opera and music theatre?
Contribution formats
We welcome submissions from scholars at all career stages as well as artists and other practitioners. Contributions may take the following forms:
- Research articles, single-authored or co-authored: 8,000–12,000 words; double-blind peer-reviewed.
- Artist interviews: 5,000–10,000 words.
- Topical statements: up to 2,000 words. These may include focused interventions, reflections on artistic practice, discussions of performances or archival materials, or position statements relating to the issue’s theme.bop.unibe+1
