Abstract

This study aims to account for sociolinguistic differences in the use of “quesuismo” in medieval and classical Spanish, through the analysis of documents included in corpus such as CORDE, CORDIAM and CODEA; To this end, parameters such as the discursive genre, the cultural level of the sender, the sex of the speaker, as well as the dialectal variation have been considered. Likewise, the objective of the paper is to observe the differences in the use of the construction “que + su” as an alternative to “cuyo”, which is present in our language since medieval Spanish. It also intends to find out the conditions of use of this structure (paying attention to the grammatical features of the possessor and the possessed, the functions played by the sequence “que + su” and the defining or nondefining nature of the relative sentence), as well as the factors that motivate its appearance in different types of texts (e.g. analytic trend in Spanish, complexity and uniqueness of cuyo as a consequence of its double use as a relative or as a possessive pronoun; pragmatic factors such as a greater transparency and an increased cohesion, or a better focusing on the possessor, and the comfort of speakers to use reduplicative structures).
