Abstract

In this article, we will analyze the multimodal speech of the Venezuelan newspaper El Universal during the campaign for the Constitutional Reform of 2007. The methodological apparatus used to study multimodality is made up of the postulates from the critical multimodal studies by Kress, Leite-García and van Leeuwen (2000); the structural analysis of the news by van Dijk (1996), and contributions from other researchers, necessary for the study of graphic resources in print journalism. The main thesis is that the complementarity of the semiotic modes present in El Universal is part of the process of producing meaning for ideological purposes in favor of the oppositional tendency. This multimodal value of the news is expressed in a coherent correspondence between linguistic and visual elements.
