Abstract

It is certainly difficult to analyse dictionaries of synonyms without taking into account the very concept of synonymy, as it is a metalinguistic problem that has been widely discussed for centuries. In general, we are aware of the greater usefulness of contrastive repertoires, since cumulative ones have scarce encoding value. However, for a long time some entries have been catalogued from the denial of synonymy and, as a result, differences among the lexical items have been included; as a result, the name of the book is a contradiction in its own terms, this is seen in its historical evolution. It is convenient, in any case, to consider the mainly normative function of the dictionary in relation to the demands of the users, regardless of considerations regarding the language system. As regards antonymy, it is striking that they occupy such a non-prominent place in the lexicographical field.
