Abstract

The event-related potential technique records the electrical brain activity generated by the presentation of a stimulus. Because of its high temporal resolution, in the order of milliseconds, this technique is useful for an accurate analysis of the time course of language processing. Research with event-related potentials has revealed patterns of brain activity associated with different levels of language processing and representation. Among the most studied, we find the mismatch negativity (MMN), associated with phonology, and the N400 and P600 components, associated with semantics and syntax, respectively.
