Abstract

This article presents a detailed analysis of the challenges and opportunities related to archiving and appraising building records from the former Basel-Stadt Building Department. The focus is on the question of how building records are appraised from the perspective of both the Building Department and the State Archives. The article analyses several aspects including the legal framework, the requirements for the long-term preservation and retrievability of the records as well as the specific interests of the institutions involved.

The analysis of the records of the former Building Department has shown that the enormous quantity and complexity of the documentation, which must be kept over long periods of time, represents the central challenge regarding the archiving of building project records. This requires not only careful planning and organisation, but also the development of specific appraisal criteria that meet the different needs of public authority archives and state archives. The analysis shows that close co-operation between the various players (project managers, records managers, legal services and archivists) is essential.
