Abstract
In their collections Swiss memory institutions keep photographs that were created in colonial contexts and thus have contributed to their legitimisation and continuation. This study examines the ethical responsibility of archives that goes hand in hand with making this sensitive cultural heritage accessible via online catalogues, virtual reading rooms and portals. Drawing on approaches of a postcolonial ethics of care, ethical questions regarding the online presentation of colonial photographs are examined on the basis of the ethical responsibility of archivists towards photographers, the people photographed, users and society. Subsequently, concrete practices and strategies for the most ethical and decolonial design of online access to colonial photography collections in Swiss memory institutions are proposed.
