Abstract

The RiC-CM archival description standard enables the description of archival holdings using knowledge graphs or ontologies. This solution significantly enriches the understanding of a collection and requires technical solutions for its implementation. First and foremost, however, archival description in RiC raises epistemic questions about the nature of documents and their creation, which need to be answered from an archival science perspective. Using the example of the descriptive processing of an archival fonds, the article shows how important it is for archivists to acquire the vocabulary of RiC-CM to be able to answer these questions, but above all to be able to conceptualise the description of a document collection in a coherent way.
