Abstract

Much of the current research on hate speech focuses on online occurrences and on the expression itself (usually written or otherwise mediatised). This article broadens the perspective by considering offline settings and asking those who are targeted by hate speech for their perspective. Looking at the perception of and reaction to hate speech – both in situ and with a certain time lag – helps to gain a more comprehensive picture of the issue. At the same time, this responds to the social demand to restore the imbalance between the victim and perpetrator perspectives, or even to reverse it in favour of the victims' interests.
