The paragraph is a unit of great importance in the processes of production and interpretation of the text. It constitutes a link between the addresser and the addressee in the sense that it allows to shape the mental structure underlying the written text while guiding the reader towards a particular interpretation. It is true, however, that paragraphs do not have homogeneous and always noticeable features when it comes to segmenting a text into paragraphs. This causes problems to novice writers and it is also the reason for the delay in adopting the current procedures of orthotypography of paragraph mark.
