Abstract
The Russian war of aggression against Ukraine has had a devastating impact on the country's cultural infrastructure, including archives, libraries and documentation centres. Memory institutions have been subject to targeted attacks, looting and destruction. The article analyses the challenges faced by these institutions and the protective measures taken during the war. Based on statistical data and documented examples, it shows how targeted destruction of cultural heritage is part of the war strategy. The response of memory institutions comprises three main strategies: evacuation of collections, on-site protection and digitisation. The article discusses the limits of traditional emergency plans when confronted with the complexity of military conflicts and emphasises the importance of international support. The aim is to strengthen the resilience of memory institutions in situations of a disaster and to highlight perspectives for future crisis scenarios.
